Financial Aid For Single Mothers: Support During Challenging Times

How do you qualify for financial aid for single mothers? It's tough to raise a child single-handedly, let alone a family.

For 38% of single mothers in America, money is always tight or in very short supply. Money for food, daycare, medical needs and school.

Yet the fact remains these women do not want to give up on wanting to better their lives. All they need is support. Both public and private institutions and organizations recognize this need and have set up a number of ways to provide financial assistance for this group of women.

Not all who need help will benefit from it, but it won't hurt single moms to try.

Types Of Financial Aid

Financial assistance comes in as many forms as there are needs. It could be for medical emergencies, to pay for rent, or to fund higher education of women who want the training to qualify for better-paying jobs.

Unlike loans, most financial aid for single mothers does not need to be repaid. Its purpose is to truly provide much needed help and support for this group of women faced with extraordinary circumstances.

Aid can come in the form of grants or assistance that will address a specific need. A scholarship is another form of aid that is usually awarded to deserving applicants based on academic merits. They are not dole outs but must be applied for and certain criteria met and requirements complied with. Because they aim to provide help to as many beneficiaries as possible, the amounts may not be as large but enough to fill the need it was requested for.

Government Grants

Among the grants given by the government are those for housing, college, rent or daycare. Single mothers are encouraged to apply and will go through a screening process. Assessment is based on need.

The most known grant is the Federal Pell Grant Program. Single mothers who are within a certain income bracket pursuing college education (undergraduate or postgraduate studies) or some training may be eligible for this grant, the minimum amount of which is $400. In determining who is awarded the grant, the cost of the tuition fee, the enrollment status of the applicant as well as total family income and size of the family are considered.

While most grants are in the form of cash handed to the recipient, a Pell Grant is directly provided to the institution where the single mother is studying and paid out annually.

Financial aid for single mothers can also come in the form of a housing grant given out by Public Housing Agencies. If you qualify, a PHA subsidy is paid to landlords, while the difference must be provided by the single mother.

Screening for grants is meticulous. To raise your chances of approval, be sure to fill out application forms completely and honestly. Remember, all information is verified. A single mother, by definition, is divorced, widowed, or her spouse disabled, handicapped or seriously injured thereby leaving her as the family's principal breadwinner.

Scholarships for Single Mothers

Most scholarships are given by private organizations or the educational institution themselves as part of their commitment to give back to the community. And many of these college grants and scholarship programs have been allocated for single mothers, owing to the unique challenge they face in life.

Non-profit organizations or foundations are known to be supportive of this form of assistance for women. The number of scholarships awarded annually vary, depending on the resources of each entity. It is not uncommon for qualified applicants to receive more than one form of financial aid to support their educational goals.

While educational grants usually set specific criteria to qualify, they are not like scholarships that require the maintenance of certain grades to continue receiving the support for their studies. But single mothers are more than committed and dedicated and rarely fail to comply with this requirement.

If you are not looking at pursuing your education at present but are constantly in need of financial help, you can still search for other financial aid for single mothers given out by different entities. Some are generous and provide emergency cash assistance, rent or housing assistance and for various other but legitimate needs.

Approval or awarding is not solely based on a benevolent spirit, lest it be subject to abuse or taken advantage of by those not deserving the benefit. Rather, financial aid for single mothers is carefully and thoroughly processed to ensure it ends up with the recipient mom who will use it judiciously and for the purpose it was requested.

Single mom financial help is out there, but you are going to have to get out there and find it yourself. In my years as councilor, I encouraged hundreds of single moms who needed financial assistance. However, most of the women I knew failed to actively look for a way to get that help. Most simply endured their situation without seeking to actually change it. You don't want to do this. If you are in a bad situation as a single mother, get out there and see if you can get the help that you need to make a difference.
